How does one describe the Boston Urban Challenge? Wicked!
Press:
Read our article in Sunday's
Boston Globe.
Winners:
Urban Challenge Boston turns out to be the most challenging race
of the tour to date. The seventh team to cross the finish line,
Mark Watkins and Jack Walter, grabbed the trip to Vegas to play
for $50,000 in November. More than 40 teams crossed the finish line
before the top ten spots for Vegas were filled. Complete

Checkpoints:
After Boston, there is no doubt that Urban Challenge is, indeed,
a unique test of mind, body, and spirit. Almost 250 racers stepped
up, but more than a few went down to elimination for checkpoint
errors. Here are the checkpoints that bedeviled the field:
Checkpoint 7: Will you cut to the chase? Find
the play in which a character muses as set forth below and you
will know the name of the North End establishment that serves
as CP 7.
The quote was from Romeo and Juliet. The checkpoint is a salon
named Romeo & Juliet in the North End. Scores of racers decided
to gamble on Marcuccio's in the North End because Mercutio is the
character quoted from Romeo and Juliet. Oops!
Checkpoint 10: Semper Fi! This Charlestown native
and Boston Latin graduate gave his life for his country. Find
his place of honor in the Public Garden...
Because the Boston Public Garden is filled with statues of famous
Bostonians, most of whom date to the revolutionary and civil war,
Urban Challenge chose a brave Marine who spent his summers working
the Swan boats in the garden and who was killed in action in Viet
Nam Lt. M.P. Quinn.
Unfortunately, scores of challengers picked a variety of famous
Bostonians who didn't live in Charlestown or give their life for
their country. The most popular error was Edward Everett Hale, the
19th century clergyman and author of The Man Without a Country.
He was a Boston Latin graduate, but not a Charlestown native, according
to Charles Wainwright, who has done extensive research on the Hale
family tree. Hale spent most of his life in cleric pursuits and,
for the final six years of his 87-year life, he acted as Chaplain
of the Senate. Check
