Under a cloudless sky and dry 80 degree temperatures, the elite
of Cleveland turned out to test themselves on a tough Cleveland
course.
Winners:
When the dust settled, Dave Landreth and Jeff Faunce claimed victory
over a field that included Jeff and Jake the winners of Urban Challenge
LA. Dave and Jeff met just six weeks ago at a wedding. Both were
fired up for UC, but neither had a partner. Completely mismatched
as running partners (Dave covers 60 miles a week and Jeff runs about
10), the pair overcame differing fitness levels and a frozen support-team
computer in securing its first place victory.
Scott, a graphic designer, and Kirk, a federal agent,
finished just behind the first place team. Good enough for a free
stay at the Paris Las Vegas Resort for the finals in November. This
team, who live in the same apartment building, relied on their nine-person
team at "mission control" (see
their web site) to help them unravel the checkpoint clue sheet.

And what happened to Jeff and Jake, our LA winners? Despite a gritty
effort and a first group start in the Trivia Challenge, the dynamic
duo went down on a tough break. Their buddy said he snapped the
photo of them at the Celtic cross, but when they handed the camera
over to race officials, the picture was a no-show. Check

Thanks:
A big thanks to our friends at Dick's Last Resort for hosting
the race and the elite of Cleveland for racing with us. We can't
wait for 2003.
A crazy thanks to the transit official who was an Urban
Challenger and, in our favor, convinced the transit authority not
to shut down the trains for scheduled maintenance. Wow! A big no
thanks to the Skip Man for not showing up.
