Mag 7 Finals
November 20, 2004
Congratulations to Catherine and Terrence Lee on their much-deserved win! Magnificent 7'ers for two years running (read their interview and their 2004 Finals Race Report), their experience and persistence paid off as they used every trick in the book to negotiate the finals course.
Only three of the seven teams had been in the Magnificent Seven before. Besides the Lees, repeaters included:
- Charlie and Justin Graham:
Team name of Tweedles, but lovingly called "Those Google Guys" by everyone. We promise we'll have a Magnificent 7 interview from them soon.
- William Healy and Scott Smallwood:
Hailing from DC, Team Good-N-You is known as the guys in those old green shirts (actually, they were new shirts this year). Here's their Mag 7 interview.
New to the Mag 7, but certainly not Urban Challenge, four highly experienced teams broke in this year:
- Jim and Becky Sampson: Team Samfer hails from Austin, Texas. Their consistently good cheer and wacky antics nabbed them the opening scenes in the pre-race video — a good omen for them, it seems.
- Kelly Kruell and Kevin Purchell: Team Bunny Droppings is a wacky match. Kruell has been desperately trying all season to qualify for the finals, only to have her partners bail on her when she does. In the last race of the season, she scored a top 10 win and a partner with Kevin Purcell. Purcell actually has raced a Mag 7 race before, running shotgun with the Fluffy Bunny team and helping them win their $50,000 last year.
- Gayla Harris and Richard McCormick: Team Dynamic Health Racing has persistently been racing with us from the start, and they finally got their break. They too, hail from Austin Texas. What is it about that town?!
- Scott Kessler and Gene Foltyn: Team All In! was known in Miami as "those other guys, where are they from?" since they'd seemed to have race everywhere. From San Diego, they took first place in the Mag 7 Trivia Challenge, no easy feat.
Checkpoints: The race started in Coconut Grove, waay south of downtown. From there it was a sprint to the rail for the fastest transit ride possible back to the race finish at the Clevelander. But wait, they weren't even halfway done as they had to find their skip in the crowd of drunken semifinalists, who seem to love the frustration of the Mag 7 teams who need their help desperately. Then a few more checkpoints in Miami Beach, before the real finish again at the Clevelander. View the checkpoints»
